28-May-2023: IMCR Seminar on Repeal AMU Amendment Act 1981

IMCR recently came to know about the following developments regarding Aligarh Muslim University:
(i) The repeal of the AMU (Amendment) Act 1981 by Parliament and the subsequent Gazette Notification issued by the Government of India on 8 August 2019.
(ii) The Government of India’s intention and move to scrap the parent AMU Act 1920 and remove its minority character.
(iii) The constitution of a High-Powered Committee by AMU to review the Pre-Independence Act of the University.

For a proper understanding of the various aspects related to the above issues, a seminar titled “Repeal of AMU Act 1981 – An Onslaught on Minority Rights and the Way Forward” was organised by IMCR on 28 May 2023 at the Constitution Club, Rafi Marg, New Delhi. A large number of University alumni and well-wishers of AMU, including many legal experts and lawyers of the High Court/Supreme Court, as well as the President of the AMU Teachers’ Association, participated in the event.

Subsequently, a detailed 4-page letter was sent by the Chairman, IMCR, to the Vice Chancellor, AMU, Aligarh on 09 June 2023 for necessary action in this regard, including a request for a meeting with IMCR at the earliest.
